Capture the Moment During Assisted Living Week 2018
When you hear “Assisted Living” what comes to mind? We used to equate assisted living communities with nursing homes, or residences where people are well cared for, but inactive and unaware. That’s not the case anymore.
In 1995, the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) established National Assisted Living Week® to educate the public about the role of assisted living in caring for America’s seniors. NCAL reports that there are more than 30,000 assisted living communities housing almost 800,000 residents in the US. Assisted living is the fastest growing, long-term care option for seniors and with their wide range of services, assisted living communities provide a housing solution for adults who can live independently but also require some assistance.
Nowadays, living in an assisted living community means receiving some help with medication management, dressing, bathing, or other activities of daily living. It also means participating in vibrant lifestyle activities such as group outings to restaurants and entertainment, exercise classes, dance lessons, volunteer projects and much more.
Each resident receives individualized services to help him or her function within the assisted living community. The communities are operated in a manner appropriate to the needs and desires of the residents served.
The theme of this year’s Assisted Living Week—September 9 – 15—is Capture the Moment, which is intended to inspire residents to realize their dreams and seize the day. The theme also supports reflection, as residents might look back on the pivotal moments in their lives, while assisted living associates are reminded that many times their everyday interactions with residents can help deliver high quality, person-centered care.
Celebrating National Assisted Living Week® will help all of us overcome the stigma that older adults in assisted living communities don’t have a purpose anymore. Through events at thousands of assisted living communities across the country, we will be reminded that no matter our age, we should be living life to its fullest.
Find an assisted living community near you and join the celebration.
