New Year, New Adventures

Welcome to 2018! It’s time for new adventures in the new year. How will you live your adventure in 2018?

Many people like to make a New Year’s resolution. It’s always a good idea to try to make your new year better. Common goals are to try a new fitness activity or get healthier. If you’re interested in improving your health and fitness, we’ve got all kinds of activities.

From walking clubs to chair fitness (yoga, aerobics and more) to Zumba and flexibility classes, you can find some way to get fit. Many of these programs are offered every week, or even several times a week. It’s easy to find what works for you.

It helps that our communities feature plenty of places to walk, often around lakes or courtyards. According to the American Heart Association, brisk walking can lead to improved blood pressure and cholesterol levels, lowering risk of heart disease and stroke. They say you should get at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity. A 20-minute walk each day can make a big difference. If that’s too much at a time, try just a few minutes in the morning and afternoon.

And if you’re interested in mental health and peace of mind, volunteer opportunities and arts and crafts can be very effective, not to mention good fun.

You can also take steps to choose healthier foods. Certain foods are known to be helpful for healthy habits. It’s believed that foods like spinach, kale, broccoli, cinnamon, berries, cherries, olive oil and brussels sprouts can help, as well as food with omega-3s (tuna, sardines, flax seed, beans). Even chocolate and coffee might be helpful!

Of course, fruits and vegetables are always a good option. Think about the ones you like, and add a little more to your diet. Snack on oranges or nuts, add an apple or grapefruit to your breakfast and try to include some kind of green in your lunch or dinner. As always, check with your doctor first.

Keep an eye out for health tips each week in January, as well as new and special programming built around healthy living and adventure. Our associates are here to help you on your journey.

If you make a commitment to living better, the results will show. Don’t get caught up in doubts or false starts – you can do this! Take advantage of the easy access to fitness options, supportive neighbors and associates, and chef-prepared foods.
