Celebrating Black History Month!

At Sagora Senior Living we are constantly creating new experiences to engage our residents and find exciting ways to showcase our amazing communities and how we truly embrace each moment we create together! As we highlight all that we do in our communities, we are excited to celebrate Black History Month! During February we will feature different spotlight stories of our residents and team members around the nation. Stay tuned to our social media channels to learn of impactful stories, experiences, and the ways that we embrace diversity within our communities.

Every February, the U.S. honors the contributions and sacrifices of African Americans who have helped shape the nation. Black History Month celebrates the rich cultural heritage, triumphs and adversities that are an integral part of our country’s history. Sagora Senior Living communities are proud to celebrate Black History Month. As people age, they sometimes forget important times like Black History Month. Below are some ways for seniors to honor the heritage of Black Americans and come together as a community to celebrate our diverse culture.

Share Memories

This is a great way to learn about individual experiences during these events and how the events made an impact on their lives. Help seniors remember by chatting about important events in the African American community. For instance, partake in interactive activities as you invite them to reminisce about the march on Washington in 1963 and read the “I Have a Dream” speech.

Remember History

Organize activities during the month that will help seniors remember historical African American events of the past. Schedule historical activities such as sharing quotes, reading Black history events, watching videos that showcase Black history, or singing songs from the Civil Rights Movement. Some good examples would be “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and “This Little Light of Mine.” After each song, ask seniors to comment on what the lyrics of the song mean to them.

Provide Education

Use the month of February as an opportunity to educate seniors about the impact made by African Americans in this country. Simply read the biographies of famous African Americans and ask them to try to identify the person described.

However you celebrate Black History Month with the seniors in your life, remember to reflect on the rich cultural heritage, triumphs and adversities of Black Americans and create ways to honor their accomplishments.

We look forward to sharing all that our communities will do this month to honor and celebrate Black History Month. Please check in on our social media channels to see our spotlight stories of residents and team members. Celebrating Black History Month is a great way to bring our residents and team members of all racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds together to create a psychologically and emotionally healthy community.
