Stay in the know

Meet Lura: wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and world traveler.

Meet Lura E., one of our residents at Lyndale Abilene Senior Living in Abilene Texas. Lura was born in Galveston, Texas on December 5, 1932. Her father worked for the railroad and her mother was a primary school teacher with a college degree from New York. One of three children, Lura has a twin brother named Buddy and an older sister named Betty.

Lura attended the University of North Texas and received her bachelor’s and Master of Education degree. It was on a blind date at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo where she met the love of her life – her husband, Joel. They were engaged for six months before the two married on August 29, 1952 in Plano, Texas. They celebrated 49 years of marriage, two daughters, seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. That’s a lot of love to share!

Lura’s best life advice? “Be faithful to God, for he never fails you. I also believe in blooming where you are planted,” she said.

One of Lura’s greatest joys is to travel the world. In fact, as a young girl, she would play “queen of the jungle” in her family’s treehouse. She was thrilled to have the experience to see Africa as an adult and to stay in a lodge up in the trees. She even had a friendly baboon swing into the lodge from a window who decided to help himself to some coffee condiments! “I loved being able to look down and see all of God’s creation, small to large, in their natural habitats,” she said as she reflected on the experience.

We are so thankful to have Lura as part of our Sagora Senior Living family!
