June- Brain Awareness Month

How many times do we ask ourselves, “Where did I leave my keys?”   Better yet, how many times have we finished a day of shopping only to search for our car in a parking lot?  When we’re young, it may be an amusing story to tell, but as we age, it can frustrating.  Although the intricacies of aging can challenge us at times, we can incorporate small brain “work outs” to help us maintain heathy brain fitness.

Maintain Healthy Brain Fitness

  • Proper Nutrition
  • Physical Exercise
  • Brain Fitness
  • Rest

Eat a healthy diet including fruits and green leafy vegetables is a great start, a heart healthy diet is also a brain healthy diet. Getting plenty of physical exercise such as walking, swimming or yoga is a good beginning, but there’s more.  Brain fitness requires us to challenge our brains. How?  When’s the last time you learned something new?  How long has it been since you learned to play a new game?  Why not study a new language? Don’t you think it’s time to take out that saxophone you used to play?  Try trivia books or word puzzles.  The key is to have fun!

Our brains tell us so much; when we’re hungry, thirsty, tired, even overwhelmed or excited.  We know how to answer our brains with food, beverages or rest as needed! Don’t forget about sleep? Did you know you need seven or more hours of rest every night? Don’t forget the value of meditation, spirituality and staying social.
