May- American Stroke Month

We work our entire lives dreaming of retirement; grandchildren, travel, volunteering, pursuing the hobbies we love.  We know all too well as we age, in order to make these dreams come true, we need to take care of our health.  When was the last time you took the time to take care of you?  When was the last time you took simple steps to help ensure your retirement years will be spent your way?  There are many things we can do to be proactive to ward off stroke. With May being American Stroke Month, we feel this serves as a great opportunity to share about important details related to stroke awareness and tips for prevention.

Stroke impacts thousands of persons each year, regardless of age, gender, or background. For those experiencing signs of having a stroke it means that there isn’t enough blood going to the brain. As a result damage may occur in speech, or create weakness or inability to use a limb. When experiencing the signs associated with Stroke, it is important to get treatment right away.

Know the symptoms associated with stroke shared by the National Stroke Foundation. (Below)

F.A.S.T.

Face drooping-Does one side of the face droop or feel numb? Is the person’s smile uneven?

Arm weakness- Is one arm weak or numb? Does one arm drift downward?
